Compassionate Contraceptives Program

At the Halifax Sexual Health Centre (HSHC), we believe that everyone should be able to get accessible and affordable birth control. Decisions about what birth control works for you should come from your lifestyle, medical history, and preferences, not your financial situation. Our Compassionate Contraceptives Program is designed to ensure you have access to the birth control you need without financial barriers.

We offer a range of birth control methods at lower prices than what you’d find at the pharmacy, including oral contraceptive pills (OCP), hormonal and copper intra-uterine devices (IUDs), implants, injections, patches, rings, and emergency contraception. These can be purchased with card or cash. We do not send records of your purchases to family doctors, pharmacies, family, etc (unless you ask us to). Any birth control purchase made at HSHC stays confidential. Purchases made on card will show up as a code, not with HSHC’s business name.

We also offer free birth control for people who need it, no questions asked! If you need birth control but are concerned about costs, just let our nurse or doctor know at your visit.

To access affordable or free birth control, simply schedule an appointment with one of our healthcare providers. They will discuss your options, provide a prescription, and ensure you have what you need. We do not require any paperwork or financial information to access our Compassionate Contraceptives program. Once you have a prescription on file with us, you can come in at any time during business hours, and as long as we have medical staff on site, we will be happy to provide refills. Emergency contraceptives are available as a walk-in service and do not require an appointment.

Please note that we can only accept prescriptions for birth control from doctors working at our clinic. Unfortunately, we cannot fill prescriptions from outside providers.

Our Compassionate Birth Control Program is made possible through the generous donations from private donors who share our commitment to accessible healthcare. Their support allows us to provide these essential services to our community.
