Halifax Sexual Health Centre (HSHC) is recruiting 2S/LGBTQIA+ youth (ages 18-24) in Nova Scotia to participate in a new leadership program, Do You Mind: Safer Dating for 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth.
WHAT IS DO YOU MIND?
Do You Mind: Safer Dating For 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth is a brand-new adaptation of Community Based Research Center’s (CBRC) popular Do You Mind? Program. This version of the program was designed by CBRC as part of a national project to address dating violence in the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community. The aim of the program is to enhance youth knowledge, skills, and behaviours to prevent and address youth dating violence and maintain healthy relationships, while also providing paraprofessional experience to 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.
The program consists of 2 parts:
Part 1: A 3-hour, virtual, interactive workshop in which participants will strengthen their knowledge and capacity to respond and prevent dating violence. Topics of discussion will include:
- What dating violence is, why it matters, and how it connects to health and identity
- How better information and health literacy can help prevent and address dating violence
- Practical tools and strategies to recognize unhealthy relationships and support each other
- How strong, supportive communities can help prevent and respond to dating violence
- Brainstorm project ideas to tackle dating violence in creative and practical ways
- Designing, pitching, and preparing to launch a Capstone Community Project to respond or prevent dating violence
Part 2: A year-long initiative in which participants will develop and deliver a Capstone Community Project. They’ll attend a monthly meeting to collaborate with HSHC’s Project Coordinator, local leaders, and service providers to develop and deliver these projects to a Nova Scotia audience.
The Capstone Community Project will consist of designing a zine celebrating 2S/LGBTQIA+ dating and relationships, as well as a film screening event to launch their zine.
Throughout the program, participants will also be asked to partake in optional surveys for CBRC to evaluate the program and examine the program’s impact.
DOES IT COST ANYTHING?
This program is FREE!
In fact, participants will make money by joining this project! Workshop attendees will receive a $ food gift card. Those who continue to work on the Capstone Community project will receive a $50 honorarium for every meeting they attend. There’s also the opportunity to receive extra honoraria for doing optional surveys for CBRC about their experience in the program.
