Abortion Counselling and Referrals

If you find out you are pregnant and you think that you do not want to continue with the pregnancy, we can help to arrange an abortion for you.  You can call and book an appointment for a “T.A.”, which stands for Therapeutic Abortion.  The receptionist will ask you the date of your last period. If your period was less than 3 months ago, the receptionist will book you in. However, if your period is more than 3 months late, the receptionist will probably put you through directly to the nurse. In Nova Scotia, abortions cannot be performed after 15 weeks and 5 days. Therefore, if you are more than 12 weeks into your pregnancy, it is very important that we arrange all the appointments for you as quickly as possible.

We do not perform abortions at our clinic, but we will help you coordinate all of your appointments.  First you will need to come to our clinic to see a doctor to get the referral for the abortion.  After that, you will need to go to the hospital for blood work and for an ultrasound before the day of the T.A.  The T.A. will be performed by a doctor at the hospital.  The date for this appointment will depend on how far along your pregnancy is, as well as how many other women are needing the same procedure.

In Nova Scotia, almost all abortions are performed at a hospital in Halifax. They are free for all Nova Scotian women with a valid health card. They are also covered for most Canadians (with a valid health card) outside of Nova Scotia, but you may have to pay up front and then be reimbursed by your province. If you are from outside of Canada, please call us to discuss your options.

The “abortion pill”, RU486, is not approved in NS and therefore is not available.
