Procedure Instructions

STANDARD PRE-IUD INSTRUCTIONS

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment, prepared to give a urine sample for routine pregnancy test.
  • Unless otherwise recommended by a physician, refrain from unprotected sex from your last menstrual period. If you have irregular cycles, avoid unprotected sex for at least three weeks prior to your IUD insertion date.
  • We recommend taking ONE of the following ONE hour prior to your appointment to help reduce cramping during and after your procedure:
    • 600mg of ibuprofen (eg. Advil),
    • OR 440mg of naproxen sodium (eg. Aleve),
    • OR 500mg of naproxen (prescription)
    • If you will be using PENTHROX do NOT take any pain or other medications medications prior to your appointment.
  • If you are having a Mirena or Kyleena IUD inserted, you will require a prescription. You will need to purchase it at the pharmacy and bring it to your IUD insertion appointment.
  • If you are getting a copper IUD, you can buy one for $80 from the Halifax Sexual Health Centre. We accept debit, credit, and cash.
  • Please bring a pad to use after the IUD insertion, as there may be some light spotting post insertion. If you are planning to use a  menstrual cup, please discuss this with the physician.
  • An IUD can be inserted when you are on your period.
  • Only if you will be using PENTHROX, please have a driver arranged to pick you up after the appointment. A driver is not needed if you are not using PENTHROX.

STANDARD PRE-IMPLANT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment, prepared to give a urine sample for routine pregnancy test.
  • Refrain from unprotected intercourse from your last menstrual period or if you have irregular cycles then no unprotected sex for at least three weeks prior to your insertion date.
  • Please alert your doctor or nurse if you have allergies to topical analgesics (i.e. lidocaine for freezing the skin).
  • Pick up the Implant from the pharmacy and bring it with you to your appointment.
  • An implant can be inserted when you are on your period.

STANDARD PRE-ENDOMETRIAL BIOPSY INSTRUCTIONS

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment, prepared to give a urine sample for routine pregnancy test.
  • Unless otherwise recommended by a physician, refrain from unprotected sex from your last menstrual period. If you have irregular cycles, avoid unprotected sex for at least three weeks prior to your IUD insertion date.
